Selective inhibition of DNA replication in Escherichia coli by 1-β-D-arabinosyl cytosine triphosphate

Abstract

DNA synthesis in toluene-treated "wild-type" E. coli is essentially uninhibited by araCTP while similarly treated pol A1 E. coli cells show marked inhibition. The characteristics of this inhibition, in the presence and absence of N-ethyl maleimide, suggest that the activity inhibited is due to both DNA polymerases II and III, and that DNA polymerase II may be more sensitive than DNA polymerase III.
