Abstract

The paper presents the earthquake resistance design of industrial steel buildings according to Eurocode 8. Conventional design takes into account either rigid floorslabs or deformable floors, where each frame carries the earthquake loads due to its tributary area. A model is presented, which takes into account the flexibility of the floors and it is shown that both the rigid floor and the deformable floor assumptions may lead to unconservative design. The effect of possible mass eccentricities is also discussed, and it is demonstrated that the EC-s approximate procedure can be also unconservative.
