Sedimentation and Gelation of Flocculated Iron(III) Hydroxide Sols

The effect of particle concentration and screened Coulombic interaction on the structure of coagulated iron(III) hydroxide sol is studied. The coagulation was induced at different dilutions by electrolytes. A method to determine the gel point, which separates the sediment regime from the gel region, has been developed. The influence of initial particle concentration as well as that of the electrolyte concentration on the space filling structure of an aggregated system, which is characterized by the volume fraction of the dispersed phase, has been investigated. Four distinct behaviors have been found as a function of initial particle concentration. A qualitative interpretation of sediment volume is given on the basis of the fractal geometry of aggregates.
