Abstract

In our study, we investigated the role of prosocial behavior and searching for meaning in life in relation to substance use in a sample of Transylvanian adolescents (N = 980, mean age = 14 years, 59.7% of the sample was male). While the relationship between substance use and the first independent variable is widely studied, its relation to searching for meaning in life is underinvestigated and the results are controversial. Logistic regression analyses revealed a different structure according to gender in relation to smoking and alcohol user status. Searching for meaning in life proved to be a predictor for both types of substance use among boys (smoking: OR = 0.893, p
