Abstract

The occurrence of prenatal hypotrophy and some minor abnormalities (simian crease, hypertelorism, antimongoloid palpebral fissues, preauricular fistula) is significantly higher in neonates with hidden congenital defects than in normal infants. Observation of these somatic characteristics, and particularly the combination of hypotrophy and multiple minor abnormalities, is of fundamental help in the recognition of inborn abnormalities at routine examination of neonates.
