Abstract

Prion genotypes of sheep belonging to four Hungarian native breeds (Hungarian Racka, 140; Gyimes Racka, 57; Tsigaia, 64; cikta, 69) have been determined. All the possible five alleles were present in the Hungarian Racka and Tsigaia breeds, the ARH allele, however, was missing in the Gyimes Racka and Cikta samples. The ARQ allele was the most frequent one (42.50-70.29%) in all the breeds studied, followed by the ARR allele (20.29-28.91%). Values estimated in the Cikta breed were compared to those reported for different Zaupelschaf populations. All investigated breeds have medium or medium-low resistance level to scrapie infection.
