The major scientific parameters (Citation Impact Factor, Science Citation Index, "National Publication Index") are briefly summarized. Their adequate use and evaluation for the characterization of the publication activity of scientists and research institutions are discussed. From the point of view of scientometry, the author gives some practical advices for the appropriate publication of scientific data (type of the publication, selection of journals). Some of the ethical aspects like authorship in scientific publications are also discussed.
