Abstract

A density function was previously interpolated on the grading entropy diagram. The data used for the interpolation are re-analysed to explain the results. The density s is split into two terms: the mean fraction densities weighed by the fraction's relative frequencies s0, and s - s 0. It is found that s0, and s - s0 are monotonically and fully determined by the two grading entropy coordinates and the fraction number N. In addition, the accuracy of the charts is analysed. It is found that the accuracy increases if the space of the grading curves is cut into two parts and a separate interpolation is made also for two parts. To illustrate the usefulness of the chart it is shown that it can be used for estimating the suction of sands from the grading curve, the relative density and the degree of saturation.
