Author has determined the place and role of rheological studies in pharmaceutical technology. The formation of structure, the relationship between drug release and consistency has been illustrated with several examples. The factors influencing the values of rheological characteristics and constants of various dosage forms (ointments, creams, gels, suspensions, emulsions etc.) have been described. Numerous elements of stability (structural changes in time, resistance of structure against mechanical and thermal effects) can be quantitatively described with rheological methods. A correlation between drug release and the viscosity of disperse and/or coherent systems characterized with mathematical function has also been confirmed.
