Reversible Switching between Optically Isotropic and Birefringent States in a Bent-Core Liquid Crystal

A study was performed on reversible switching between optically isotropic and birefringent states in a bent-core liquid crystal. The presence of the optically active domains observed both in the antiferroelectric (AF) and ferroelectric (F) transformed states was explained. The birefringence of the structures was estimated from the anisotropy of the electronic polarizability in the plane normal to the light propagating through the sample.
