Retro Diels-Alder Reactions

Abstract

As a continuation of the chapter retrograde Diels-Alder reactions in Comprehensive Organic Synthesis, retro Diels-Alder (rDA) reactions published in the period 1990-2011 are reviewed. The rDA reactions are suitable for the construction of organic compounds through adducts from dienes and dienophiles followed by decomposition, mostly by heating or applying flash vacuum pyrolysis. The target compounds include alkenes, arenes, and different heterocycles, but also fullerenes and carbon nanotubes. The great number and variety of the products make rDA reactions a highly important field of organic chemistry. Some of the methods are suitable for the preparation of enantiomerically pure compounds. The theoretical and practical aspects and mechanistic features are discussed.
