The interpretation of unusual phonemena - frequently found in multiple equilibrium systems - is given in terms of response reactions through examples without detailed mathematics. It is shown that the extent of reactions in multiple systems is not related in any way to the processes actually taking place; it is only a mathematical tool to take into account the principle of mass conservation. The fundamental equations of chemical thermodynamics are expressed in terms of response reactions. The features and the possible use of this new approach is outlined.
