Removal of suspended solids, phosphate and ammonium ions from communal sewage using clinoptilolite derivatives

Clinoptilolite containing tuffs of 10-300 μm particle size enriched with Al3+ or Fe3+ were added to a sewage-activated sludge mixture at a rate of 150 mg/dm3 in laboratory and pilot plant experiments. By this treatment over 80% of orthophosphates having an average concentration of 20 mg/dm3 could be removed. The decomposition activity of the activated sludge was increased simultaneously at least by 20%, while a 50 and 60% decrease of TSS and COD, respectively, was observed in the effluent. Ammonium ions were removed by ion-exchange from the sewage in a clinoptilolite bed. For regeneration of the exhausted bed, KCl solution is suggested. -Authors
