Relationship between the correlation factor in tracer diffusion and the coordination number

Abstract

An expression, f = 1 - 2/Z(Z is the coordination number), is well known as an approximate formula for the correlation factor, f, in tracer diffusion via vacancy mechanism. By taking into account the number of common nearest neighbouring sites of two neighbouring sites in addition to the coordination number, an improved expression is derived. Further, a corresponding expression for f is derived for a lattice consisting of sites with different coordination numbers.
