The frequency difference K* of νaNH2 and νfNH/D in thioacetamide and monodeuterothioacetamide gives the approximate degree of coupling in the NH2group. The total effect of coupling being represented by 2K*. A plot of 2K* against the strength of H-bonding (Hs) shows a decreasing degree of coupling with increasing Hs. In 2-aminoacetophenone the difference of the two NH frequencies in various solvents is given by ΔNH2=G+2K*-Hs, where G is the effect of intramolecular H-bonding.
