Recognizing primary volcanic landforms in the Carpathians with the help of three-dimensional computer relief images

Identifying the primary volcanic landforms has been a difficult question in the geological and geomorphological research of the Carpathians, since, to an unknown extent, the erosion in the volcanic areas of some hundred thousand to several million years might have degraded the original relief. One method to decipher the present relief may be the computer relief drawing based on topographical maps. In this way, one can exaggerate and tilt the relief, and this may help to reestablish a previous statement of the relief evolution. In this paper, the author presents the advantages of this method, and besides some general comments, new results for the primary landforms of two Carpathian volcanoes of different ages are discussed. -Author
