Recent controversies and new challenges in structural topology optimization

Abstract

This keynote lecture deals with structural topology optimization, a relatively new but rapidly expanding field of structural mechanics. After discussing its fundamental features and defining its subfields (layout optimization and generalized shape optimization),we reviewthe early history of both exact and discretized topology optimization and show extensive applications in the car, machine and aerospace industries, as well as in architecture and medicine. . Then a brief summary of both theoretical developments and numerical methods is given, and computational difficulties and quality control in topology optimization discussed. This includes a detailed review of basic features of optimal structural topologies, including some recent controversies in basic theory and numerical techniques. Finally, some new challenges and future perspectives are outlined.
