Abstract

This chapter introduces the main R&D directions- adaptive manufacturing, digital manufacturing, knowledge-based manufacturing, and networked manufacturing, outlined in the European initiative Manufacture. These issues have to be handled in a holistic way and at least two additional requirements-that is, the real-timeness and cooperateveness of the whole system, have to be added that are of high and increasing importance. The chapter highlights the main results of a national R&D project in Hungary on Digital Enterprises, Production Networks, and the main concept of a new national research project VITAL: Real-time Cooperative Enterprises. Decision support systems were developed within the project to help enterprises to cope with the problems of uncertainty and complexity, to increase their efficiency, to join in production networks, and to improve the scope and quality of their customer relationship management. © 2006
