Rates of alkyl radical-iodine scavenging reactions in normal and cycloalkanes

Abstract

Pulse radiolysis techniques have been used to determine the rate constants for iodine scavenging of the parent alkyl radicals produced in neat liquid cycloalkanes of C5 to C10 and normal alkanes of C6 to C17. No significant differences were observed in the rate constants for the normal alkanes or the cycloalkanes at the same viscosity. The dependence of the inverses of the observed rate constants on the viscosity of the media shows that they are not determined solely by diffusion. However, it was possible to describe the observed rate constants with a combination of a diffusion controlled rate constant (kd = 1.56 × 1010/η M-1 mPa) which scales inversely with the viscosity of the media and an activation controlled rate constant (ka = 2.44 × 1010 M-1 s-1) which is the same for all of the media.
