The Raman spectra of polycrystalline boehmite (γ-AlOOH) and its deuterated analogue have been measured and analysed together with existing i.r. data. It has been found that i.r. and Raman spectral activities are governed by the rule of mutual exclusion, showing that the effective space group is the recently discarded D172h-Amam. The experimental facts are in agreement with the results of an unusual application of factor group analysis for a structure with vacancies, in which hydrogens are assumed to be delocalized on Wyckoff sites 8f.
