Radiotracer study of interactions of anions and adatoms on metal surfaces with high real surface area: Specific anion adsorption accompanying the equilibrium formation and dissolution of Cu and Bi adlayers on a platinized platinum electrode

Abstract

A radiotracer study of the specific adsorption of 35S labelled HSO4-(SO42-) 36Cl labelled Cl- ions was carried out in the course of cyclic voltammetric study of underpotential deposition (upd) of Cu2+ and Bi3+ ions at a platinized electrode in the presence of 1 mol dm-3 HClO4 and H2SO4 supporting electrolyte, respectively. A correlation between the voltammetric and the corresponding differential radiovoltammetric peaks was found in both cases but it was shown that the origin of this parallelism is quite different. In the case of copper an enhancement of anion adsorption caused by the formation of adatoms in the reduction process while for bismuth the oxidation of the adatoms leads to an enhanced anion adsorption. An attempt is made to interpret the phenomena observed.
