Radiation chemical formation and precipitation of Turnbull blue from Fe(III)-oxalate

Abstract

The radiation chemical analogue of the light induced formation of Turnbull blue, K[Fe(II)Fe(III)(CN)6], from K3[Fe(III)(oxalate)3] and K3[Fe(III)(CN)6] was investigated by pulse radiolysis. The kinetic analysis revealed a two-step process: after a pseudo-first order reaction an autocatalytic formation of Turnbull blue takes place. The rate coefficient of the first step is k8=1.42 x 105 M-1 s-1. The incubation time of precipitation was also determined.
