Quantum effects in pinning of CDW and SDW by impurities

Quantum phenomena are discussed which take place near impurities in charge-density wave (CDW) and spin-density wave (SDW) systems on a length scale small compared to the BCS amplitude coherence length, where the phenomenological theories cannot be applied. Around the impurity Friedel oscillations are formed and the mismatch between the Friedel oscillations and the CDW (SDW) results in a nonsinusoidal pinning potential. Intragap electronic states are formed which depend on the position of the CDW. Possibility of formation of two-level systems with quantum tunneling is also considered.
