Abstract

On the basis of surveillances carried out in countries with developed cattle breeding in the dairy cattle sector from the diseases mastitis causes the most serious economic losses at herd level, most part of which results from the decrease in milk production. Estimation of losses resulting from the decrease in milk production on the basis of individual somatic cell count (SCC) can help very much taking into account maximally the economic aspects during decision making process. During the examination in case of a large-scale dairy cattle herd keeping 1550 milking cows the losses resulting from the decrease in milk production of cows producing milk with a SCC of more than 250 000/ml were quantified on the basis of individual SCC and mean milk production values of four different monthly control milking representing the year 2000. On the basis of calculation this amount was more than 10 million forints in 2000 in the case of the given holding.
