Abstract

Four types of Mg centres stable at room temperature were produced by bleaching of the F band in X-irradiated NaCl(Mg) single crystals. Absorption, thermoluminescence, ESR, photoconductivity, thermal and optical stability measurements provided strong evidence that two of the centres are paramagnetic, consisting of a single substitutional Mg+ ion and of a substitutional Mg+ ion associated with a vacancy pair, respectively, while the other two are diamagnetic, consisting of a single interstitial Mg atom (Z2 centre) and of an interstitial Mg atom in a vacancy pair, respectively.
