Abstract

Significant public awareness has to be created to eliminate the epidemic of the metabolic syndrome, which is creating significant challenges globally. A cross-sectional survey was performed among randomly selected adult people, aged 35 year or more in Hungary to evaluate the public awareness of the metabolic syndrome. It was found that 29% of the people surveyed knew the term, while 40% of them learnt about the term from their friends and family members. The survey also revealed that another 29% of the people gathered information about the epidemic from the media, 26% were informed by doctors, and 5% by others. A significant social effort is needed to provide proper treatment for people suffering from the metabolic syndrome. The public awareness of the metabolic syndrome and its serious consequences should also be considered as a key point to achieve these goals.
