Protein synthesis in acute pancreatitis

Abstract

The in vitro incorporation of 14C-valine into proteins of rat pancreas decreased significantly after induction of pancreatitis. Since the ribosomes isolated from pancreatic tissue in acute pancretitis were able to incorporate radioactive amino acid, the decrease of protein synthesis in acinar cells could not be attributed to the damage of the ribosomes. A thermostable component of low molecular weight inhibiting valyl-tRNA synthetase was extracted from rat pancreas. This factor appeared to accumulate in acute pancreatitis. Parallel with the diminution of protein synthesis the activities of some digestive enzymes (amylase and trypsin-like enzymes) decreased, whereas the free amino acid pool of the gland increased in acute pancreatitis.
