Products due to wear in the tissues around the hip joint following hip joint implantations

Abstract

The authors analysed changes in the tissues following hip joint implantations in 14 cases. The interval between implantation and histological examination varied from 2 wk to 15 yr. The authors found, that on the inner layer of the joint capsule immediate to the implant, a metal- proteinate layer developed, and cobalt, nickel, chromium, particles of implant origin were demonstrated later in the mesenchymal tissues as well. In the fat tissue around the hip joint, cobalt and chromium, in the regional lymph nodes, cobalt, chromium and nickel particles were found; there were no metal deposits in the muscles. Acrylic bone cement particles in the joint capsule, in the bone marrow of the distal part of the femur, were found, but they were not present in the lymph nodes. The authors discuss the histological reaction due to metal and acrylic particles and their histological identification.
