Productive psychotic episode following complex partial status epilepticus

Research output: Contribution to journalArticle

Abstract

In a previously normal woman aged 60 yr, a complex partial status epilepticus that lasted 3 days and was confirmed by EEG, was followed one day later by a typical productive psychotic episode. The rarity of complex partial status epilepticus confirmed by EEG is pointed out. This appears to be the first report of a productive psychosis after such an event. It is unusual for a psychosis in a virtually untreated person to follow an epilepsy that has only manifested itself a few days previously. The case is discussed with reference to the literature. It is assumed that the activity pattern that favored the occurrence of the productive psychosis had developed as the consequence of a persistent epileptic activity disorder of temporal structures.
