Abstract

Polymer composites composed of a biologically degradable matrix and reinforced with basalt fibers were produced and mechanical as well as microscopic investigations were carried out on them. The application of basalt fibers is an alternative to the commonly used reinforcing fibers since it has a favorable price/weight ratio. During the experiments different types of reinforcing fibers and additives to increase the fiber/matrix interfacial adhesion were used and the results of the samples were compared. It was concluded that if the basalt fibers are treated adequately the mechanical properties of the composites can be improved.
