Abstract

The prevalence of urolithiasis in the GFR was assessed by means of a representative questionnaire survey. On average 5% of the population had one or several periods of urolithiasis during their life (6% males, 4% females). The rate of relapse was between 40 and 55% depending on age and sex. Its first manifestation in women occurs early, at the age of 16 to 20 yr, and reaches a second peak between 36 and 40 yr. In men there was a steady increase until the 40th year of age. In towns 5 to 6% of the population have at least one manifestation of urolithiasis in their life; for the countryside this figure is 3%. The professional groups most often affected are civil servants and other public employees (6%), unskilled labourers (5%) and housewives (5%). The possibility of preventative health education is outlined and the place of specific screening methods for potential urolithiasis cases is described. The frequency of urolithiasis can be lowered decisively as a result of early recognition, early treatment and an efficient relapse prophylaxis.
