Abstract

Unplasticized PVC (uPVC) layered silicate composites were prepared from a commercial sodium (NaMMT) and organophilized montmorillonite (OMMT). The silicate content of the composites changed from 0 to 10 vol%. Structure was characterized by wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) and by the measurement of light transmission, while stability by the determination of color. Glass transition temperature and tensile properties of the composites were also measured. Close correlation was found among the extent of exfoliation, the intensity of WAXS scattering peaks and the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites.
