Abstract

The possibility of producing adhesive polymeric coatings (polyethylene PE) on the surface of natural and synthetic zeolities was studied. When Cr3+-exchanged varieties were applied this task could be achieved, with ethylene and propylene monomers and their mixtures, in a gas-solid reaction. The PE-coated zeolites posses excellent hydrophobicity, facilitating mixing into mass-produced plastics. The distribution of the fillers in the matrix is homogeneous. The technical characteristics of plastics filled with PE-treated zeolites show marked improvements in tensile-strength and resistance against bending stresses. At higher amounts of the filler, their form-stability is excellent. It can be concluded, therefore, that the PE-treated materials can be used as fillers in the mass production of plastic articles. -Authors
