Abstract

Postnatal depression is a common complication of the postnatal period and could be prevented by antidepressant treatment during pregnancy or by psychotherapy. One hundred and sixty-three mothers were interviewed using the Leverton test, between 1st January, 2001 and 31st December, 2003. The persons for survey were selected randomly in the South-West region of Hungary. Seventy-nine percent of the pregnant and 77.2% of the puerperal patients were vulnerable. Multiparous women exhibit dysmenorrhoeic complaints less frequently, than the primiparas (67.8% v. 75%). Stress (27.6% v. 13.9%), lack of appetite (23.0% v. 8.9%) and slowed thinking (24.1% v. 10.1%) were more prevalent among multiparas. Altogether, the somatic symptoms of depression, distress and characteristics of anxiety were assessed to be typical for multiparous women. Vulnerability and a consecutive depression are extremely prevalent in Hungary, and are more characteristic in cases of multiparous women.
