Positive Muons as Light Hydrogen Isotopes: Location and Motion of Positive Muons in α-Iron Studied over Five Temperature Decades

Abstract

The spin precession frequencies and the longitudinal and transverse spin relaxation rates of positive muons (μ+) in μ-iron have been measured on single crystals and polycrystalline samples in the temperature range 20 mK to 1000 K. The measurements are interpreted in terms of the temperature dependence of the μ+ diffusivity and of possible interstitial-site occupancies of the μ+. Together with data on hydrogen and deuterium diffusion the results are discussed in terms of current models of quantum diffusion of light positively charged particles in metals.
