Polyisobutylene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) for robust templating of highly ordered mesoporous materials

Abstract

An investigation was carried out to synthesize and explore the applicability of a template with extreme hydrophobic contrast, composed of polyisobutylene (PIB) and polyethylene oxide (PEO). The aggregation and the mutual packing motifs of the aggregates of selected PIB-PEO templates were analyzed in detail by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of the resulting silica replicas in terms of their dependence on template concentration. This template was used in the synthesis of mesostructured crystalline titania films through the evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) route. A disordered glassy packing of deformed spheroidal micelles was found with an increased average assembly size of about 20 nm in diameter, at about 50 wt.-%.
