Polyanions in molten KPb - A paradox explained?

Abstract

We have created new models of the structure of liquid KPb at 873, 1473 and 1873K. These are used to illustrate specific points concerning the 'existence' of Pb44- polyanions or 'Zintl' ions. We conclude that such groupings exist but are only transient, probably with a timescale of the order of 1ps. All of the existing experimental data are consistent with such a model.
