Abstract

Thin-layer chromatography has always been a simple and relatively inexpensive method. It is widely used because of several advantages - for example, either several spots can be separated in parallel or two-dimensional separation can be easily performed; specific and sensitive color reagents enable detection of, and sometimes distinction between, separated spots; and instrumental scanners can be used to perform reliable quantitative evaluation. Other features of planar chromatography are its open (or open- able) arrangement of the stationary phase the possibility of continuous observation of the separation process.
