Physiological and ecological evaluation of bacterial cyclodextrin glycosyltransferases (CGTases)

Abstract

Cyclodextrin glycosyltransferases (CGTases) convert starch effectively to valuable cyclic malto-oligosaccharides called cyclodextrins (CDs). In this review some arguments are presented and systemised to support the view that the formation of these compounds is definitely not the wastage of carbon sources but, quite the contrary, is beneficial for CD-metabolising bacteria in their habitats. There are accumulating experimental data indicating that these micro-organisms harbour an effective and synchronised system for the extracellular formation, uptake and intracellular degradation of CDs. This novel starch degradation pathway is an alternative to the widely found combination of amylases and linear malto-oligosaccharide transporters. The striking similarities between the components and regulation of these two pathways indicate that they may be related quite closely both functionally and evolutionarily.
