Photo-response of hydrogel functionalized with spiropyran

Abstract

We prepared photo-responsive hydrogels composed of N-isopropylacrylamide and acrylate monomer containing a spiropyran residue, and investigated systematically the influence of the condition of cross-linker content and solvent on the photo-responsive property of the prepared gels. As a result, we observed that a gel prepared at small cross-linker content shrinked within only 5 sec in response to the blue light irradiation. Further, we confirmed also that the conductance of the gel increased promptly by the light irradiation indicating the efficient proton dissociation from the chromophores, which had been protonated and stabilizing the hydration of polymer main chain.
