Abstract

Prenatal diagnosis of Neural Tube Defects (NTD) was reviewed from the international literature. Based on the results of multicentric studies the authors established that detection rate of the NTD-s is about 80%. This result is relatively good, as compared to other serious malformations. However detection rate is different for various types of NTD: anencephaly being 94-100%, whereas spina bifida only 68-93%. Ultrasonographic examination plays a key role in screening out these cases and the determination of maternal serum alpha fetoprotein does definitely increase the screening result efficacy if the gestational age is precisely known.
