Partial oxidation of ethane over silica-supported molybdate catalysts

Abstract

In a program to develop an efficient and selective catalyst in the partial oxidation of ethane, we found that the addition of various potassium compounds to V2O5/SiO2 and to MoO3/SiO2 greatly enhanced the conversion of ethane and advantageously influenced the product distribution. However, better catalytic performance was obtained in both cases when KVO3 or K2MoO4 was used as catalyst. In the present work, these studies have been extended to silica-supported Rb2MoO4, and some divalent metal molybdates, MgMoO4, ZnMoO4, and MnMoO4, several properties of which differ from those of alkali metal molybdates. For comparision, we also present data for MoO3/SiO2. As oxidants, we use O2 and N2O.
