Abstract

Paleomagnetic observations relevant to the tectonics of the Alpine-Mediterranean zone are of very different quality. By introducing the concept of effective precision, the first part of this review demonstrates how data can safely be applied to regional tectonics; then guidelines are suggested for a fast check on data and also on the reliabilty of interpretions. The second part deals with paleomagnetic evidence of displacements. It addresses the main issues in tectonically interpreted paleomagnetism and assesses models in the light of effective precision and in the context of all available relevant paleomagnetic observations. -from Author
