Oxidation of ethylbenzene in the presence of the spin trap 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide

Abstract

Liquid phase oxidation of ethylbenzene by molecular oxygen in the presence of commercial 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide (DMPO) was investigated at 60°C. EPR measurements revealed that at these conditions the oxidation of ethylbenzene is induced by commercial DMPO, the latter acting both as a spin trap and an initiator. Computer simulation and EPR-spectrum registered that if ethylbenzene is exchanged into chlorobenzene the initiation is due to radicals produced from impurities present in the commercial DMPO.
