Orthoselective Alkylation of 2-Ethyl Aniline With Methanol on Ferric Oxide Catalysts

Abstract

Vapour phase methylation of 2-ethyl aniline (2-Et-A) with methanol over hematite (α -Fe203) and α-Fe203 containing 3,5 and 8 wt% Ge02 was studied. The main reaction products are 2-ethyl-6-methyl aniline (2-Et-6-Me-A), N-methyl-2-ethyl aniline (N-Me-2-Et-A) and N-methylene-2-ethy aniline (N-Meen-2-Et-A). Germanium promoted catalysts are more active, stable and selective in ortho-methylation than pure α -Fe203. The crystalline phases detected were α-Fe203, and α-Ge02. Only Lewis acid sites were observed on the catalysts. Deposition of Ge02 does not change the acidity of the α -Fe203, however, it decreases the hydroxyl concentration and the oxidizing power of the hematite surface. Data suggest that germanium promoted catalysts are less susceptible to poisoning than hematite.
