Orientation in a driven lattice gas

Abstract

The effect of an electric field on the ordering is studied in a square lattice gas exhibiting anisotropic ground states. Below Tc the particles form parallel chains directed horizontally or vertically. Monte Carlo simulations show that these chains prefer the orientation parallel to the applied field. This phenomenon is analytically investigated by using a simple mean-field approximation and determining the exact solution on a 2×2 lattice. The application of an electric field as a tool for producing an oriented phase is discussed.
