Abstract

This paper concerns the optimal design of a spherical cupola of given base radius that consists of a material without tensile strength. The combined action of the weights of the cupola proper and a cover of uniform thickness is considered, and the designs for minimum total weight (minimum vertical load on foundation) and minimum structural weight (minimum material consumption) are discussed.
