Abstract

This paper discusses a generalization of the Prager-Nagtegaal superposition principle for the optimal plastic design of structures subject to more than two alternate loads, and presents extended lower bound theorems for convex, piecewise differentiable, specific cost functions. One lower bound theorem can also be interpreted as an energy theorem for elastic structures. The proposed principles are illustrated by examples.
