An important parameter of a semiconductor laser operated in the cw mode is its thermal resistivity. The described optical technique is used to measure the thermal resistivity of laser diodes by means of a simple experiment. A heat flow model elucidates the theoretical calculation of thermal resistivity. Measured and calculated results are compared. In conclusion, dependences other than the temperature variation of the band gap are discussed.
