Open-circuit potential decay investigation of the surface layer of an electropolished Cu anode

Abstract

The relaxation of the electric field on the Cu/H3PO4 interface was studied by potential decay measurements as a function of polarization potential and the rotation rate of the anode. The analysis gives evidence for the existence of a solid layer on the surface, with a structure depending on the polarization potential and also on the diffusion layer. Information about the thickness of the solid layer could be obtained from the relaxation times. The calculated thicknesses show a close connection with the photoresponse of the solid layer.
